IEEE PES India Scholarship Award (IPISA)

India’s energy future depends on the engineers we empower today

Despite India’s large technical education intake, electrical engineering attracts relatively fewer top-performing students due to its perceived difficulty and rigorous curriculum. At the same time, many high-achieving graduates opt for IT careers over core engineering roles, creating a growing talent gap in the power and energy sector. To address these challenges, the IEEE PES India Scholarship Award (IPISA), instituted by IEEE India Philanthropy and the IEEE Power & Energy Society (PES), supports India’s brightest young minds in electrical engineering. The program aims to encourage young people to pursue careers in electrical engineering and technology by supporting meritorious students in pre-engineering qualifying examinations.

IEEE India Philanthropy works with institutions, technical partners, and communities to demonstrate how clean energy solutions can improve daily operations while creating long-term social and environmental benefits.

Hear From Them

India’s energy transition demands skilled engineers who can design smarter grids, integrate renewables, and drive innovation in power systems.

IPISA strengthens this future by:

  • Encouraging top-ranking students to pursue Electrical Engineering
  • Providing sustained financial and professional support
  • Providing 2 technical courses on the IEEE Blended Learning Platform
  • Connecting scholars with industry leaders and mentors
  • Building a committed pipeline of future energy innovators

It is about giving passionate students the chance to grow, learn, and make a real difference. With the right support, they won’t just study power systems; they will actively shape the future of India’s energy landscape.

The amount of scholarship will be Rs. 75,000/- (Rs. Seventy five thousand only) per student per year to be renewed annually for entire duration of degree course subject to further qualifying requirements. The scholarship will be distributed as below:

50,000 per year per student towards the college and hostel fee. No bills to be produced by the selected student.

To the maximum extent of Rs. 25,000  per year per student towards the expenses incurred towards attending seminars, conferences, tutorials, workshops and internships to be paid to the student on production of suitable documents of attending the same.

Beyond financial assistance, scholars gain:

  • Active membership in IEEE and PES
  • Access to technical courses on the Blended Learning Platform of IEEE
  • Opportunities to build professional networks
  • Opportunity to attend power and energy conferences

For many students, this support makes the difference between simply earning a degree and becoming an industry-ready engineer.

  • First-year students enrolled in a full-time UG program in Electrical Engineering. (AICTE/UGC-approved).
  • Higher secondary (or equivalent) marks should be above 60% or of equivalent grade.
  • Valid rank in IIT JEE (Main/Advanced) or state-level engineering entrance exams.
  • A student should have IEEE and PES active membership

The scholarship follows a rigorous and transparent pathway:

  1. Nationwide call for applications.
  2. Academic and merit-based shortlisting.
  3. Review and approval by IEEE volunteers.
  4. Orientation and document verification.
  5. Reallocation of awards will occur if applicants are non-responsive.
  6. Final verification with college authorities.

This ensures that only qualified and committed students benefit from the program.

A structured monitoring mechanism is followed to review academic progress, verify documentation related to fund usage, and ensure compliance with scholarship guidelines. This ongoing evaluation process promotes transparency and accountability while supporting scholars throughout their undergraduate journey and ensuring the sustained impact of the program.

The scholarship is renewed annually based on:

  • Consistent academic performance with no backlogs
  • Responsible use of funds
  • Active membership in IEEE and PES

Progress is reviewed each year to ensure scholars remain engaged and on track.
